History, Fundamentals to Web Design and its Importance

History of web development

The internet began as a visual medium. And, its rise within mainstream culture is intertwined with its history. A graphic interface was developed, just like computer applications and systems, to allow users understand the potential of the internet.

The display monitor played a role in proliferating the personal computer in work environments and households worldwide. However, the monitor only became widely used when video games, word processors and spreadsheets increased in use among users.

In the early 1990s, the visual-oriented web browser was developed. In turn, it paved way for the birth of the World Wide Web. Since then, web technology has improved over the years, including aesthetics. However, some of the earliest web design techniques still exist today.

In 1989, a British scientist, Tim Berners-Lee, invented the World Wide Web (WWW) at a time when he was working at CERN. He developed the web to meet the increasing demand for automated sharing of information among scientists based in various institutions and universities worldwide.

CERN is a community of over 17,000 scientists across more than 100 nations worldwide, meaning it isn’t an isolated lab. The scientists work in national laboratories and universities in their home countries but visit the CERN site from time to time.

Therefore, the scientists require reliable tools for communication purposes when away from CERN. The WWW idea was to integrate various evolving data networks, computers and hypertext technologies into a single powerful information system that’s easy to use and accessible worldwide.

Fundamentals to web development

Some basic knowledge on web design that you should know make up the principles of creating sites. They ensure that you create an aesthetic, engaging, easy to use, responsive and effective website. They include:

  • Color
  • Communication
  • Purpose
  • Typefaces
  • Navigation
  • Images
  • Load time
  • Grid-based layout
  • Mobile-friendly

Importance of web design and development

Websites are useful for business or personal use. They help create a good first impression, aids search engine optimization, supports customer service, builds trust with your audience, creates consistency, and puts you ahead of your competition.

Web design also provides a platform for marketing and selling online.
